Great Wave Zen Sangha will host a Beginner’s Mind Zazenkai on June 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This retreat will be dedicated to introducing the fundamentals of Zen practice to those who are new to Zen—but practitioners of all levels of experience are encouraged to attend this day that will be rich with opportunities for meditation, scripture recitation, teisho, and dokusan with Gendo Roshi. Lunch will be included.

The retreat will take place at Great Wave’s new practice center, 315 N. Rath Ave. in Ludington. Directions are available on our Location page.

Spring Mindfulness Retreat, May 30 to June 3, 2018

For over ten years The Bluewater Community of Mindful Living has been offering mindfulness retreats up north at Song of the Morning Yoga Retreat Center in Vanderbilt, Michigan just north of Gaylord off I-75. We are happy to announce that our Spring Mindfulness Retreat this year will be held May 30 to June 3. You may come just for the weekend, for all five days, or as your schedule allows.

Our spring retreat has become an anticipated event for many who enjoy the deep quiet and beauty of the north woods in spring. Everyone is welcome, beginners and experienced meditators alike.

We sit. We walk. We breathe. We enjoy the nourishment of food and friends.

Our lives are often busy and complex. Mindfulness practice is an opportunity to slow down, focus, and enjoy our lives. Everyone is cordially welcomed to join us for these days together. The practice is simple, easy to follow, and of benefit to all.

Allowing yourself to enjoy peace and quiet in beautiful, natural surroundings with the companionship of spiritual friends can be transformational.

Song of the Morning offers 800 beautiful, wooded acres along the pristine Pigeon River and is ideal for meditation. We will practice sitting and walking meditation, enjoy some noble silence, yoga, the Ten Mindful Movements, dharma sharing discussions, early morning walks to greet the day, and other activities from the Plum Village tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh.

Song of the Morning provides delicious vegetarian meals and a wide variety of comfortable accommodations at varying rates. The cost will be around fifty dollars a night or less for a bed in the “Dormitory Dome”, meals included. More deluxe rooms, some with private baths are available.

Camping is now offered on a “sliding scale” for those with budgetary restraints.

Withered Tree Mindfulness Meditation Community welcomes Chicago-area Dharma Teacher Jack Lawlor to Grand Rapids to lead a Day of Mindfulness on April 14th. The day will include sitting and walking meditation and instruction; time for reflection; and Jack will speak about mindfulness and deep listening as vital components in peace and social justice work.

Jack was is ordained in 1992 and given the name True Direction; he is one of only a few Dharma Teachers that represent Thich Nhat Hanh. In addition to facilitating Lakeside Buddha Sangha (or ‘meditation group’) in the Chicago area, has led numerous retreats and Days of Mindfulness in the Midwest and northern Rocky Mountain States. He has been married for thirty-five years and has two adult children.

Jack has a warm personal style and the ability to bring humor and fun to the teachings. He also has a gentle approach, such as inviting practitioners to adjust their posture if they become uncomfortable while sitting in meditation. This is a unique opportunity to practice mindfulness in Thich Nhat Hanh’s tradition with such a skillful teacher.

A vegetarian lunch will be served. A donation of $20 to cover expenses is encouraged. Meditation instruction provided. Bring your own sitting gear, there will be some cushions, bench and many chairs available.

Don’t miss the 7th Annual Michigan Walk to Feed the Hungry at Kensington Park in Milford, Michigan, on Saturday, September 30, 2017. Buddhists from all over the state of Michigan and in cities around the world will gather together to walk in support of the hunger relief programs of Buddhist Global Relief, the charity founded by renowned Buddhist scholar-monk Venerable Bhikkhu Bodhi.

From I-96, take exit 151/Kensington Rd and enter the park; there is a $7 entrance fee/car; After entering the park, drive about a half mile past the toll booth to the West Boat Launch Picnic Area on the right side of the road. The area is wheelchair accessible (the start point for the walk).
