Free showing of “Gate-Atomic Flame”

October 14th, 2010

The epic film GATE-Atomic Flame (2008) documents the journey of several Zen monks from Japan to the Trinity Site in New Mexico, the locale of the first atomic test detonation in history. In 2005, the monks transported atomic flame–kept alive for 60 years in Hiroshima–to the Trinity test site in Nevada. The monks wanted to extinguish the flame at the site; to bring the destruction full circle, to heal the past and reduce the threat of future nuclear war.

We want as many people as possible to see this film, so we decided to screen it FREE. Because Gate won’t be shown at theaters nor sold on DVD, this will be a unique opportunity. We hope the experience will inspire people to help others live in peace, transcending country, religion, race and the past.

ONE SHOWING ONLY

TIME: 7 p.m., October 28th
PLACE: 107 S. Kedzie Hall, on the Michigan State University campus
COST: Free (donations are welcome and encouraged)

Short Biography – Gilbert M. Gutierrez,  Chan Master

Gilbert Gutierrez is a lay Chan master in the Chinese tradition.

His parents were from Mexico, and he grew up and was raised a Catholic in the United States. Gilbert obtained a BA and also a law degree at UCLA.

In 1974 he was admitted to the California bar and has practiced law for over thirty years in Riverside California.

Growing up Catholic Gilbert felt a strong tie with the Virgin Mary and the concept of universal compassion for all beings. But he also had religious doubts and felt a longing for a great truth which he knew existed but hadn’t found. His religious search took him to many corners, and he also practiced for years in the marital arts.

Being drawn to the meditative dimension of the martial arts, Gilbert began studying Chi Gong with different masters. He was invited to become a Chi Gong master himself but declined feeling his deeper questions had not been answered.

Gilbert began formal training in Buddhism under a Buddhist Chi Gong Master. Chance events led him to read the Diamond Sutra, and he had a profound experience of illumination.

Later Gilbert met and undertook years of training as a disciple of the Great Chan Master Venerable Sheng-yen.  After devoted effort, he became one of five lay persons and the only American to receive transmission as a Master Sheng-yen’s dharma heir as a Chan Buddhist master.

Today Gilbert teaches dharma and practices law in Riverside California.

He is married to Ai-Lun Wei, also a discipline of Master Sheng-yen, and has a son, Ananda who often accompanies his father around the country when Gilbert teaches.

Gilbert’s web page from The Riverside Chan Meditation Group is  http://www.riversidechan.org/.   His dharma talks can be downloaded at   http://dharmatalks.riversidechan.org.

This October Gilbert is returning by popular request to teach for the seventh time to Michigan, where he has a growing group of dharma students.

View Michigan Buddhist in your language

    August 13th, 2010

Today I added the on-site Google Translate function, to make it easier for folks who don’t speak English as their native language. Just choose your appropriate language in the drop down menu at the top of the sidebar, and Google will do the rest.

I had a bit of trouble getting the code to calm down, but things are looking “OK” for now. If you have troubles, please let me know: webmaster@michiganbuddhist.com.

    Thank you!

The 12 Step Buddhist Comes to Macomb

    August 12th, 2010

    From The Macomb Daily:
    Published: Wednesday, August 11, 2010

    By Maryanne Kocis MacLeod
    Macomb Daily Staff Writer

Addiction recovery, like most puzzles, has many pieces. In his book “The 12-Step Buddhist” (Beyond Words, $16), Portland-based author Darren Littlejohn explores the integration of Buddhist philosophy/spirituality into more familiar, Western recovery models.

“For me, 12-step programs alone focus mainly on the day-to-day struggle,” Littlejohn said. “Psychotherapy alone doesn’t recognize spirituality. And Buddhism, in and of itself, does not understand addiction. For me, I had to come up with my own system and work it all together to be successful.”

Littlejohn will share his unique approach to recovery from 12–3 p.m. Saturday at SHAR, 6902 Chicago Road, in Warren. Cost is $10 per person; $25 tickets include a copy of his book with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Greater Macomb Project Vox. GMPV is a recovery advocacy group aimed at reducing the stigma attached to substance use disorders.
