Prison Dharma

Rev. Sokuzan Robert Brown, head teacher of Sokuko-Ji Buddhist Community in Battle Creek and Buddhist representative on the Chaplain’s Advisory Council for the Michigan Department of Corrections offers to train volunteers to do dharma work in the prisons and is willing to make initial visits with new volunteers.

Please consider volunteering for this fulfilling opportunity. It is our experience that both the volunteers and the inmates benefit greatly from these visits. It is not necessary to be a highly trained teacher to be useful in this work. All that is required is a willingness to share meditation, simple readings from Buddhist texts and honest discussion.

Volunteers are also needed to correspond with Buddhist inmates. Please contact Sokuzan for further information. Sokuzan’s website is and his email is: [email protected]
